Volume 45 Number 2 2021 of Australian Health Review, the Australian Healthcare and Hospital Association’s peer reviewed journal, was the second themed issue on value-based health care. The edition was released in time for the Value-Based Health Care Conference in May 2021.

Several articles in this issue tackle the challenges of moving from volume to value head on and provide a body of evidence demonstrating progress in the Australian health system towards outcomes-focused, value-oriented healthcare.

This issue also highlights the emerging expertise being developed amongst Australian researchers, policy makers and health service providers in crafting an approach to value in health care that is fit for purpose in the Australian health system.

The editorial, ‘Achieving greater value and equity in health care’, was written by AHHA CEO Alison Verhoeven.

Volume 212, Issue 3, Feb 2020, Implementing value-based healthcare at scale: the NSW experience

NSW Health Secretary Elizabeth Koff and Deputy Secretary Dr Nigel Lyons recently authored an article in the Medical Journal of Australia (MJA).
The perspective article considers what value in health care means and how the NSW health system can deliver it at scale. It explores the worldwide challenge of health service sustainability and what the move from volume to value means for NSW Health.

Volume 43 Number 5 2019 of Australian Health Review, the Australian Healthcare and Hospital Association’s peer reviewed journal, was a special edition featuring research on value-based health care and outcomes that matter to patients. A number of articles discussed the importance of collaboration between health providers and the embedding of integrated care into everyday clinical practice. In releasing the edition, AHHA CEO Alison Verhoeven said that ‘our current health system is structured to rewards, and payment for, occasions of service rather than results and outcomes that matter to patients’ – read the full media release here.
