PATHWAYS TO WIDESPREAD ADOPTION OF VALUE-BASED HEALTH CARE

In our first seminar, Dr Stefan Larsson MD, PhD, will compare and contrast two different approaches taken by leading Swedish hospitals to widespread adoption of value-based health care: “big-bang” vs incremental. He will identify the risks and key success factors in each approach and discuss the circumstances under which to choose each approach. He will conclude with advice on assessing organisational readiness for value-based transformation.

Speakers

Dr Stefan H. Larsson MD, PhD

Stefan Larsson is one of Consulting magazine’s “Top 25 Consultants” and one of the “30 Most Influential People in Public Health”. Stefan has been a leading voice for more than 20 years on value-based health care.

Stefan is a co-founder of the International Consortium of Health Outcomes Measurement, a not-for-profit organization for global standardization of outcomes measurement, which has Michael Porter, HBS and Karolinska Institute as partners.

For the past five years, he has worked with the World Economic Forum in its “Value in Healthcare” program. Currently, he supports this effort as a Platform Fellow to the Global Coalition for Value in Healthcare.

Stefan is a Senior Advisor to BCG. Prior to joining BCG, Stefan was an associate professor at the Karolinska Institute. He has published 22 articles in peer-reviewed international journals. Stefan has also trained at Harvard Medical School, MRC-Human Genetics Unit in Edinburgh and EMBL Heidelberg.

DELIVERING HEALTH CARE VALUE THROUGH DIGITAL PATIENT JOURNEYS AT INTERMOUNTAIN HEALTHCARE

Along with a senior executive from Intermountain Healthcare, Dr Josh Kellar MD, PhD, will describe the process of designing and implementing digital patient journeys at Intermountain Healthcare to deliver better patient outcomes and experiences at lower system cost. He will share lessons from the transition to digital and conditions for success. He will also describe the post-COVID potential for digital and telehealth transformation from a value-based health care perspective.

Speakers:

Dr Josh Kellar MD, PhD

Josh Kellar is a partner in BCG’s Chicago office working in health care and strategy with a focus on advanced analytics, value-based delivery of health care, and application of new digital technologies within health care. He has experience working across health care sectors, including work with integrated payer provider systems, academic medical centres, Biopharma R&D, and Medical Technology companies.

Prior to joining BCG, Josh completed a PhD in materials science and engineering and a postdoctoral fellowship in oncology at Northwestern University where he focused on the use of carbon nanomaterials for targeted drug delivery and genomic sequencing. He also holds a MA in poetry from Boston University and a BS from Georgetown University where he majored in physics and English.

VALUE-BASED PROCUREMENT IN MEDTECH

Value-based health care approaches can be applied across the operations of health care systems and providers. In this seminar, Jennifer will discuss the strategy and benefits of transitioning procurement to value-based approaches with a focus on the experience of MedTech Europe on working with suppliers and buyers to shift to value-based procurement.

Speakers:

Jennifer Clawson

Jennifer is the Global Leader of BCG’s value-based health care program, working with clients across all sectors of the industry.

Jennifer works with clients to create new value-based business models and evaluate strategic opportunities to improve health outcomes. She is a global leader in value-based procurement, particularly MedTech, as a key lever to improve the quality of care and the financial sustainability of providers and health care systems.

Jennifer also played a key role in the establishment of ICHOM (the International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement).

Prior to joining BCG, Jennifer was a vice president at J.P. Morgan, where she worked on the futures brokerage business and the investment banking business.

Maria is Managing Director of the Ivbar product suite and product lead for their international benchmarking functions. Maria has led various analytics start ups across the Nordics to bring the power of data to business decision making.

Lucas is the Manager of Clinical Outcomes, Registries and Data distribution for the Medical Research Data Management (MRDM) product suite. Lucas has worked as an advisor and partner to health care organisations for 10 years on their strategies and journey to better value.

NEXT GEN TECH ENABLERS

This seminar will discuss the role of modern technologies in enabling value-based health care. It will examine the critical role of data and informatics in value-based health care, standardised patient-centric health outcomes measures and the development of an AI prediction tool for acute kidney injury in the ICU, which is being used to reduce the incidence and consequence of renal failure.

Speakers:

Dr Robin Mann

Robin Mann is a BCG global expert in digital health. He is qualified in medicine and engineering and has an MSc in health informatics from UCL. He has a 20+ years career in digital health and is a past National CIO in a Catholic health system, has designed federated governance systems and led the implementation of electronic medication management in NSW.

Dr Jonathan Lim

Jonathan Lim qualified in Australia as an MD, has an MBA from INSEAD, and is now on the global leadership team of BCG’s Health Systems sector. He has led projects in Australia, Europe, the United States, Canada, and Africa. Jonathan was recently seconded to the World Economic Forum (WEF), where he led the “Value in Healthcare” project.

Dr Mathias Blom

Mathias Blom is an MD, PhD, Harvard trained epidemiologist and data scientist passionate about leveraging data and advanced analytics for the benefit of patients and the healthcare industry. He is also involved with designing data science organisations and associated operating models.

Johanna Benesty

Johanna Benesty supports health care clients in the private and public sector, and international organisations to tackle challenges such as AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, maternal and child health, immunisation. Part of BCG GAMMA, she helps clients leverage Digital and Analytics to transform their activities and capabilities.

BUILDING SYSTEM-WIDE CAPABILITY FOR VALUE-BASED HEALTH CARE – THE NHS ENGLAND EXPERIENCE

In this seminar, Dr Ben Horner will be joined by representatives of the National Health Service and will share some lessons on their experiences building system-wide capabilities in VBHC. They will discuss effective engagement between central teams and regional provider organisations, including approaches to using data and guidelines and to supporting locally connected pathway development. They will finish by discussing the next evolution of the successful RightCare program.

Speakers:

Dr Ben Horner

Ben Horner is a Managing Director and Partner in BCG’s London office. He works with the National Health Service and private hospitals, focusing on both rapid financial improvement and health economy transformation. He also works across Western Europe.

In his recent projects, Ben has led the execution of four NHS hospital financial improvement programs, redesigned clinical pathways, created sustainable services across health systems, and conducted strategy and operational reviews for private acute care hospitals.

Prior to joining the firm, Ben was a Fulbright Scholar at Harvard University in a transatlantic collaborative PhD program as part of the team due to perform the first British face transplant. Ben worked as a doctor for eight years, specialising in plastic surgery.
